Aromatherapy 101

Aromatherapy is a branch of herbology that involves the therapeutic use of essential oils to enhance one’s entire well-being.   Essential oils are botanical extracts such as lavender, rosemary, mint and sandalwood, which are obtained from living plant and fruit material i.e. leaves, twigs, bark, berries, seeds, flowers and roots.  Essential oils are high volatile concentrated plant extracts that are not oily, but are called oil because of their chemical composition.

The “essence” of a plant is its “vital life force” or that which makes the plant grow and is captured during the extraction process.  The “essence” of a plant is the backbone of aromatherapy.  Each essential oil has its own personality and healing capabilities.

Aromatherapy is the art, science and technique of blending and applying essential oils to influence positive changes in your life.  Aromatherapy is made up of five elements and allows for easy integration into any lifestyle.

Five elements of aromatherapy

  • Aesthetic aromatherapy – the effects essential oils have on our skin, hair and nails
  • Psycho aromatherapy also called aromachology– the effects aromas have on our emotions and moods
  • Clinical/medical aromatherapy – the effects essential oil have creating and maintaining a state of homeostasis
  • Spiritual/Esoteric aromatherapy – the effects of essential oils have on establishing Devine inner connection
  • Holistic aromatherapy – the integration of all five element bring balance and connection to the mind, body and spirit

How Essential Oils Travel Through The body

Essential oils are carried around the body via the circularity system.  They enter the blood stream through topical application via the skin or through the inhalation via lungs.  In additions to being multi-faceted in their healing capabilities essential oils have an affinity to different body systems.

Examples:

  • Lavender – heart and nervous system
  • Tea tree – immune system
  • Juniper – kidneys
  • Ginger – digestive system
  • Geranium – hormones
  • Ylang Ylang – aphrodisiac

Non-invasive and multi-faceted aromatherapy is an excellent choice for all age groups and for exploring self-nurturing techniques.  Essential oils and the practice of aromatherapy can be incorporated into any life style.

  • Contra indications - the essential oil used may trigger a certain unwanted response, i.e. raising or lowering blood pressure, stimulation or sedation etc.
  • Properties Abilities - what the essential oil(s) can be used for.
  • Application - how to apply.
  • Blending – mixing instructions. Dilution – how many drops of essential oil to use in carrier.

Nine Thing You Need To Know About Aromatherapy                                                       Top

You can have lots of fun when formulating your aromatherapy blend, however, there a are nine basic principals to follow:

  • Always mix your blend in glass or glazed ceramic containers
  • Insure that the cap or cover fits tightly
  • Follow formula/recipe instructions for amount of essential oil(s) drops to be used
  • Use 100% cold press virgin carrier oil for dilution
  • Read essential oil data sheet before use
  • If you are in doubt regarding the effects of an essential oil after reading data sheet Leave It OUT of your blend and seek advice from qualified Aromatherapist
  • Use amber or cobalt glass bottles (helps to protect essential oils from sunlight) store blend in a cool dark place
  • Never use more than three different essential oils in your blend

Basic Mixing (dilutions) Instructions For Creating Your Aromatherapy Blends

Fill your clean dry, amber, cobalt blue glass bottle to the shoulder line (where the bottle begins to curve) with 30 ml or 1oz of sweet almond carrier

  • Add 18 drops (total) of lavender essential oil to the 30ml or 1oz almond (carrier)
  • Gently roll bottle between your palms to mix
  • Do Not Use More Than Three (different) Essential Oils To Formulate Your Blend
  • The total number of essential oil drops should never exceed 18,unless you are following a formula found in aromatherapy

Purchasing Essential Oils

Always conduct a smell/sniff test before purchasing your essential oil.  This will tell you all you need to know about the freshness of the essential oil.

Your Nose Knows                                                                                                  Top

Even if you are unfamiliar with aromatherapy “your nose knows” intuitively if the essential oil is alive or dead.  At AJI we call it the Champagne feeling. The essential oil will tickle the nasal passageway giving a heady, alive feeling…even if you do not like the smell of the essential oil.

When purchasing essential oils from a store, the bottles (even if in the correct packaging) should not be in the shop window or under bright hot lights this will cause the essential oil to decompose.   If the bottles are covered in thick dust, chances are that they have been sitting on the shelf too long and are no longer potent.

Key things to look out for:

  • Good essential oils are sold in amber, cobalt blue or hunter green bottles
  • Essential oils sold in clear glass bottle are useless for aromatherapy
  • They are stored/retailed in a cool place away from direct sunlight light and heat from light fixtures
  • They are dust free
  • Seal unbroken
